The Steelers font was invented in 1964. It was created by a typographer named Charles Bigelow when the Pittsburgh Steelers approached him to design a font for their letters and numbers. Ten years later, in 1974, the font was exclusively licensed to the Pittsburgh Steelers and remains there today.
